The Moat Pit, Culross

Donna was commissioned by archaeologist, Donald Adamson, and former mining consultant, Robert Yates, to produce artist’s impressions to feature in their article for the Scottish Archaeological Journal, revealing new findings about the 16th century plan to sink the world’s first underwater pit shaft in The Firth of Forth at Culross, Scotland.

The brief was to produce a series of reconstruction pen, ink and watercolour sketch illustrations, depicting the Moat Pit and Egyptian Wheel at Culross Colliery, circa 1618.

The Moat Pit is the world’s first example of undersea mining. Built in 1590, it formed a significant part of the mining complex developed by Sir George Bruce of Carnock, which also included a pioneering drainage system using an Egyptian Wheel.

Donna’s reconstruction drawings featured on the BBC programme “Villages by the Sea” Series 4, Culross episode.

“I think that your drawings were a highlight for the programme makers, and made the ruins that we were talking about come to life.”
