PROCESS

Hand-drawn and watercolour illustrations have been a staple of architectural representation for centuries.

They possess a unique, timeless quality which reflects the tradition and craftsmanship of architectural drawing and sets them apart from CGI and AI-generated alternatives.

While digital tools have their place, there’s something inherently satisfying and soulful about seeing the progression of an artwork that’s crafted by hand. It resonates with the viewer on a deeper level, offering a more emotional, tactile and memorable experience, that digital renderings simply can’t replicate.

Traditional architectural illustrations bring a level of artistry, prestige and craftsmanship that remains unparalleled in conveying the true essence of a design.

Architectural illustrations serve as an efficient and affordable way to promote the potential of a building project in order to capture attention, secure planning approval or drive sales.

They transform flat plans and elevations into beautifully rendered works of art which are cherished by clients, respected by planners and more easily understood by the public.

Attention to detail is Donna’s key focus to ensure an accurate representation of each project. She employs a variety of techniques to convey the desired atmosphere and her style and use of traditional watercolours are particularly sympathetic in portraying historical and listed building projects.

The following information outlines the typical sequence of events involved in commissioning Donna to create an architectural illustration. The whole process is a collaborative working partnership with the client.

  • The client initiates contact with Donna to discuss their project requirements.
  • The client provides basic project information, enabling the creation of a quotation and proposed timescale. Prices vary according to size, detail, scale and subject and begin at £450.
  • Once the project is agreed, the client sends full project drawings. A site visit may be arranged where possible so Donna can get a feel for the project and photograph any specific existing features which should be included in the illustration.
  • Preliminary sketches are created, either freehand, using measured perspective or typically by computer-generated model. These are sent to the client for content and viewpoint approval, with revisions made where necessary.

At this stage additional details are requested to ensure the most accurate rendering possible, including a list of building materials, paint colours and any other relevant specifications. Discussions may also take place regarding the inclusion of figures, cars, landscaping, and street furniture. Donna is often asked to use her expertise to incorporate architectural features and landscaping schemes in the illustration where these have not yet been finalised and which are often adopted by the developer in their final project. This can provide the client with a valuable design service, even at an early stage in their project.

  • The final illustration is then completed traditionally, usually in watercolour and/or pen and ink, and delivered to the client for their intended use. High-resolution JPG files are emailed and the original artwork is available on request.
